TDP 70-200L II with 1.4x TC III at 280mm vs 70-300L at 300mm. TDP 70-200L II with 2.0x TC III vs 100-400L at 400mm. I have also tried the version II 2x on the 70-200 and just find that combination to be unacceptable (yes I am VERY picky about the sharpness I get out of my lenses).
The Canon RF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM is a pro zoom that exploits the benefits of both mirrorless and modern optical design to deliver a truly unique proposition. It essentially matches the optical quality of the superb EF 70-200mm f2.8 Mark III, but with a barrel that’s two thirds the weight and, when set to 70mm, three-quarter’s the length.
The II and III are the exact same minus a paint color change and a fluorine coating to help with lens flare. Not worth the extra money if you can get the II cheaper. I considered the RF version simply for space savings, but still couldn’t justify it. The II is still just a fucking superb lens for photos.
Buy Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM Lens featuring EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format, Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/32, One Fluorite Element & Five UD Elements, Air Sphere Coating, Ring-Type Ultrasonic Motor AF System, Optical Image Stabilizer, Internal Focus, Focus Range Limiter, Weather-Sealed Design, Fluorine Coating, Detachable, Rotatable Tripod Collar, Rounded 8-Blade Diaphragm.
You focus the camera on the focus target and take a photograph, then inspect the scale to determine if the most accurate focus is at the target vs. closer or farther. When I use these tools, I deliberately de-focus the camera closer than the target so the camera is forced to focus outward to the target.
Since I knew the benefits of IS, the choices were the 70-200 f/2.8 Version 1 or the newer, sharper, smaller, lighter 70-200 f/4 L IS. I chose the f/4. All of the attributes were there. Plus there was talk in the near future of the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS Mark II. I could always sell the f/4 and apply towards the new f/2.8 Mark II.
Front element doesn't rotate. Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II. Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD. The front element doesn’t rotate. This is important if you use filters, as some such as polarising or gradient filters have to be orientated a certain way. Includes lens hood. Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II.
